Being a senior citizen and loving it!

Being a senior citizen and loving it!

If you or someone you love is a senior citizen, I encourage you to make the "Golden" years super. Robert Browning said, "Grow old along with me. The best is yet to be."

Without quoting statistics, it is a known fact that modern medicine, and all the knowledge we have about staying healthy has contributed to people living better and longer. Today's citizens are not sitting around in rocking chairs waiting to die. They are trying to live their lives to the fullest. They realize the senior years are a phase of life to be confronted and mastered.

Any older person who is willing to follow good health habits has an excellent chance of living well into the 80s, and 90s easily. Those who do not take care of themselves will unquestionably have physical and emotional problems because of their neglect.

We have all known older individuals who looked and acted much younger than their age. Tom is 71 and enjoys his work as a carpenter. He is trim and enthusiastic about life. He thinks and acts like a younger person because he is appreciative of every day and has a youthful spirit. He says, "I could find things to gripe about like why the kids don't come around more but you got to take life like it is. I know they love me and that their busy."

In today's society older folks are assuming increasingly significant roles because they are reliable and have considerable experience. The millions who comprise our seniors represent a good percentage of political and economic power in our nation.

I know a lady who is in her mid eighties who survived several husbands and had no difficulty finding male companionship. She thought of herself as a youthful person and acted the part. She was on a date with a gentleman of similar age who asked, "Dot, how old is you. She replied, "How old would you like me to be?" She said he was quiet for a minute and then said, "I guess it doesn't make any difference."

I think what does matter in relationships is respect, friendship, being a caring person, trust, and kindness. If you are fortunate enough to have those qualities with a companion or friends treasure and appreciate what you possess.

Of course, life's reality tells us that sickness and death are inevitable. But why wish adversity on yourself before your time? Concentrate on taking care of yourself the best you can, be productive, put interesting things on your schedule, and search out new interests.

Sometimes a simple change can bring a lot of pleasure. Bob came to see me six months after is wife died. He said he did not have an emotional problem but felt empty since his wife died. He thought it might help to talk to an objective listener. I suggested a few books to help Bob map out a plan and we agreed to talk again in a few months. When I saw him a second time he appeared much more cheerful than during our initial meeting.

I asked Bob what had transpired since our initial meeting. Here is what he said, "I wouldn't say I was depressed the first time we talked but I needed to ventilate my thoughts and feelings. I wasn't ready for Betty to die. Sure I know we don't live forever but it hit me hard when she died so suddenly.

I did a little research since we talked and thought about our meeting. I found your book a source of comfort and after reading it I bought a dog. I never realized an animal could bring so much pleasure. What I realize now that I am getting adjusted to living alone is that I have to get on with my life. It is a different stage of life that requires new thoughts and actions. I know that now."

I believe we can stay "young" for a long time with the right attitude and actions to make the maturation process enjoyable. Never forget that with age comes a freedom from earlier responsibilities like child rearing and job pressures. You have done a good job with your life so far now you need to be responsible for influencing your health, activities, relationships, and general well-being.

One thing is certain, no matter what age, each day is precious. Be appreciative of the opportunity to make every day count. Make the best and most of you talents, strengths, and energy. Forget about your biological and chronological clock. Have faith that life can be beautiful.

Perhaps age matters primarily when talking about wine and cheese. Devote your thinking to how you can make your stage of life as meaningful as possible. Do what is sensible and age appropriate. Think carefully before deciding to climb mountains. Also, send positive messages to yourself. Operate from a position of being optimistic and confident. Get involved with people who are enthusiastic and productive. Lastly, appreciate the aging process! You are alive, so make the best and most of it.
