Stay Healthy With Sunless Tanners and Sunscreen
Did you know that your risk for developing skin cancer doubles if you have had five or more sunburns during the course of your life? Just five... Many sun worshippers will have a sunburn five times in a single year let alone during their entire lifetime!
That statistic alone should be enough to make us use sunscreen everyday and give up on getting a suntan. But wait a minute, doesn't society encourage us that a little bit of color makes us look healthier and more attractive? We have learned to view nicely bronzed skin as more desirable than pale, white skin.
So what's a girl to do...risk a deadly disease and premature aging down the road to look "great" today or follow the advice of experts and protect the skin and remain hopelessly pale? The best answer to this dilemma is simple - do both.
Fortunately, you don't have to avoid the beach to protect your skin, you just need to buy a good sunscreen and apply it often and cover every spot of exposed skin. Protective clothing and umbrellas can help keep much of the harmful rays away as well. For those with particularly sensitive skin or for spending hours in the sun, a sunblock might be an option to try as well.
Sunscreens and sunblocks are available in a wide variety of formulas so there is truly something for everyone. The options available today are easy to apply and are more skin-friendly than some of the earlier products. You should look for protection from both UVA and UVB rays.
By now you're thinking, ok, my skin is protected but how do I safely get rid of this dreadful pale coloring? That is the simple part. In fact, the only thing difficult is sorting through all of the options available in sunless tanners these days. When self-tanning products were relatively new on the market, there were just a few to choose from and nearly all of them produced orange-colored skin or streaks.
Well, I'm happy to report that those days are long gone. Every major skincare brand has at least one self-tanner in their product line and the majority of them work extremely well. Depending on your preference, there are creams, gels, lotions, mousse and sprays available. These products are quick to dry, easy to apply and they look great on the skin. By shopping around a bit, everyone can find a sunless tanner that will work perfectly with their skin.
Just one note of caution about sunless tanning products...most of them do not contain sunscreen and offer no protection from sun damage. It is necessary to also use a sunscreen product along with a sunless tanner to achieve the best of both worlds!
